We have  Water based natural floor finishes (including water based primer, wax or paint) which are easy to use, non toxic and solvent free. We then have  ‘classic’ range, which are the traditional natural orange oil based finishes, available in clear or white (White is the Scandinavian look). Natural Floor Varnish and Oils: A Healthier and Eco-Friendly Choice for Your Home

When it comes to choosing floor finishes, the options can be overwhelming. However, natural floor varnish and oils are a healthier and environmentally friendly choice for your home. These products not only enhance the beauty of your wooden floors but also provide superior protection without compromising your indoor air quality or the environment. In this article, we'll explore the benefits of natural floor varnish and oils, the role of natural orange oil solvents, and how to properly use and prepare these finishes for your home.

Why Choose Natural Floor Varnish and Oils?

Traditional floor varnishes and oils contain harmful chemicals and high levels of solvents that can release toxic fumes, negatively affecting the air quality in your home. In contrast, natural floor varnish and oils are made from renewable resources, such as plant oils and resins, which are non-toxic, biodegradable, and have a lower environmental impact.

Health and Air Quality Benefits

Natural floor varnish and oils have a significant advantage in terms of indoor air quality. They emit fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during the application and drying process, reducing the risk of respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems associated with traditional floor finishes. Furthermore, these eco-friendly alternatives are safe for children and pets, making them the perfect choice for creating a healthy living environment.

Natural Orange Oil Solvents

Many natural floor varnishes and oils use natural orange oil solvents derived from the peels of citrus fruits. This solvent is not only eco-friendly but also has a pleasant citrus scent, unlike the harsh chemical odours of conventional solvents. Additionally, orange oil solvents are effective in breaking down and dissolving dirt and grime, making them suitable for cleaning and prepping the floor before applying the finish.

How to Use Natural Floor Varnish and Oils

Before applying a natural floor varnish or oil, it is essential to prepare the surface correctly. Start by cleaning the floor thoroughly, removing any dirt, dust, or debris. Sand the floor if necessary, ensuring that it is smooth and even. Vacuum and wipe down the floor to remove any sanding dust.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions when applying natural floor varnish or oil. In general, use a brush or roller to apply the product evenly across the floor, working in small sections. Allow the varnish or oil to dry according to the recommended drying time before applying additional coats, if necessary. It is essential to ensure proper ventilation during the application and drying process to aid in curing and to minimise odours.

Conclusion

Choosing natural floor varnish and oils is a smart decision for your home and the environment. By opting for these eco-friendly alternatives, you'll not only protect and enhance the beauty of your wooden floors but also create a healthier living space for you and your family. With their reduced VOC emissions, natural orange oil solvents, and ease of use, natural floor varnish and oils are the perfect choice for your next flooring project.

What is a breathable hard oil? What does 'hard oil' mean?

A natural breathable hard oil, like Auro 123, is an eco-friendly wood finish derived from natural and sustainable ingredients. It is designed to protect and enhance the appearance of wooden surfaces while allowing the wood to “breathe,” which means it permits the exchange of moisture between the wood and its surrounding environment. This property helps prevent the wood from warping or cracking due to moisture-related issues.

The term “hard oil” refers to the fact that this type of oil dries to a hard and durable finish on the wood surface. This is achieved by using natural oils that polymerise or harden as they cure, providing a long-lasting and robust protective layer. Hard oils are often used for wooden floors, furniture, and other surfaces that require extra durability and protection from daily wear and tear.

Auro 123, for example, is a natural breathable hard oil that offers an environmentally friendly option for protecting and beautifying wooden surfaces. It combines the benefits of natural ingredients, sustainability, and excellent performance to provide a healthier and more eco-conscious alternative to traditional wood finishes.
